It just so happens that I did burn my clutch cable! I charge my battery while in place on the cycle. I have extended a permanent pigtail from the positive terminal, down to the vicinity of the clutch cable. Of course I have an isolated end piece to protect the possibility of a short when not using. OK, so in the case of needing a jump start or a battery charge, I attach to this pigtail and also the negative source lead to any suitable engine ground.
The problem that I had, resulted from just damn carelessness. I took the battery leads off, but forgot to place the pigtail insulator back in place. The pigtail swung across the bare cable end and sheared into, in one swipe, as if it were a cutting torch!!
